American Negroni

A bourbon drink built over ice in a rocks glass, with Aperol and Campari sharing the bitter measure.

Go to the recipe ↓

This American Negroni pairs bourbon and sweet vermouth with a bitter measure split equally between Aperol and Campari, plus a dash of Angostura. You build and stir it in the rocks glass it is served in, so you need no mixing glass and no strainer. The shopping list does include two bitter aperitif bottles, plus Angostura for a single dash.

Method as published

  1. Measure the bourbon, sweet vermouth, Aperol, Campari and Angostura bitters into a rocks glass.
  2. Add ice to the glass.
  3. Stir in the glass and serve without straining.

Garnish Lemon twist

  • The source names Fighting Cock 103 as the bourbon and Cocchi as the sweet vermouth.
  • The bourbon, sweet vermouth, Aperol and Campari are conventional alcoholic ingredients. The Angostura dash is a bitters ingredient that needs label care, and it rules out any zero-alcohol claim for this drink.

How it differs from a Boulevardier

The Boulevardier also combines bourbon, sweet vermouth and a red bitter aperitif, but its proportions and handling differ. The IBA Boulevardier uses 45 ml bourbon or rye with equal 30 ml measures of Campari and sweet red vermouth. It is stirred in a mixing glass, strained into a chilled cocktail glass and garnished with orange zest, with lemon zest as an option. In this American Negroni, the combined 3/4 oz of Aperol and Campari is less than the 1 oz of vermouth. It also adds a dash of Angostura, stays on the ice it was stirred with and takes a lemon twist.
