Carroll Gardens

A stirred rye cocktail with Punt e Mes, Amaro Nardini and a spoonful of maraschino.

Go to the recipe ↓

The Carroll Gardens is stirred and strained, not built or shaken. Rye leads at 2 oz, and Punt e Mes and Amaro Nardini follow at a half ounce each, so each modifier is a quarter of the rye. Maraschino goes in by the spoon rather than the ounce. The published versions agree on that structure. They differ on the size of the maraschino spoon and on whether the lemon peel stays in the drink.

Garnish Lemon peel

  • Imbibe measures the maraschino as 1 barspoon. A barspoon is not a fixed unit, so adjust that line by hand when scaling.
  • Imbibe does not say whether to express the peel over the drink.

Garnish Lemon peel, expressed and discarded

  • PUNCH lists the vermouth as sweet vermouth and names Punt e Mes as its preference. It also prefers Rittenhouse for the rye and Luxardo for the maraschino.
  • PUNCH calls for 1 scant teaspoon of maraschino. A scant measure is approximate, so adjust that line separately when scaling.

Spoon size and the lemon peel

PUNCH and Cocktail Virgin both twist the lemon peel over the drink and discard it, so only the oils stay. Imbibe lists the peel as the garnish and gives no instruction to express or remove it. For the maraschino, Cocktail Virgin uses 1 tsp, PUNCH a scant teaspoon and Imbibe a barspoon. All three keep it a small accent beside the half-ounce modifiers. Cocktail Virgin strains into a coupe, and PUNCH allows a coupe or a cocktail glass. Imbibe specifies only a cocktail glass.
