Long Look Back

Kacie Lambert's vermouth-free Manhattan riff on rye, Japanese whisky and Braulio, built over one large cube.

Go to the recipe ↓

Punch credits the Long Look Back to Kacie Lambert of New York City and presents it as a take on the Manhattan that drops vermouth. In its place are a split base of rye and Japanese whisky, Amaro Braulio, Demerara syrup and Angostura bitters. The practical difference is the method. The drink is not stirred in a mixing glass and strained. Everything goes into the double rocks glass with one big ice cube and is stirred there, so you need the serving glass, a large cube and a spoon, but no strainer. Make the 1:1 Demerara syrup before you start, because it is the only component you prepare yourself.

Method as published

  1. Put the rye whiskey, Braulio, Japanese whisky, 1:1 Demerara syrup and Angostura bitters into a double rocks glass with one big ice cube.
  2. Stir in the glass until the ingredients are integrated.
  3. Express an orange peel over the surface of the drink, then add the peel as the garnish.

Garnish Orange peel, expressed over the drink

  • Demerara syrup: Punch specifies 1:1 Demerara sugar to water. Punch does not say whether the ratio is by weight or volume, and it gives no preparation steps.
  • Punch names Woody Creek as an example rye and Toki as an example Japanese whisky. Both are given with 'such as', so they are suggestions rather than required bottles.
  • Punch lists the recipe as serving 1.

The Cocktail Virgin Slut version

Cocktail Virgin Slut's 2024 post reproduces the Punch formula, which it says it took from Punch. It names Rittenhouse and Kavalan Classic in parentheses beside Woody Creek and Toki, and garnishes with an orange twist.
