Mojito

Rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda water, built in a tall glass.

Go to the recipe ↓

A Mojito is white or light rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda water, built in a tall glass. Before you start, decide how the lime goes in. The main recipe here, from Bacardi, uses measured fresh juice and a measured pour of soda, so the whole drink is in the glass before the crushed ice. Jeffrey Morgenthaler also measures both, and adds a lime half that has already been squeezed. Punch muddles a quartered lime in the glass with sugar and finishes with soda as an unmeasured top-up.

Method as published

  1. Pour the rum, lime juice, sugar syrup and soda water into a highball glass.
  2. Add the mint and press it gently with a bar spoon to release its oils. Leave the spoon standing in the glass.
  3. Fill the glass three-quarters full with crushed ice, then churn with the bar spoon to combine.
  4. Top with more crushed ice and serve immediately.

Garnish Fresh mint sprig

  • Bacardi puts the small handful of mint at 10 to 12 large leaves, about what fits loosely in your palm.
  • The sugar syrup is 1:1.
  • For a group, Bacardi multiplies the ingredients, presses the mint and squeezes the lime in a pitcher, adds the syrup and rum, and adds ice and soda just before serving.

Jeffrey Morgenthaler: lime hull and straw

Contains alcohol

Ingredients

Original recipe quantities.

Method as published

  1. In a 16-ounce glass, gently muddle the mint sprig with the simple syrup.
  2. Add the spent lime hull, lime juice, rum and chilled club soda or sparkling mineral water.
  3. Top with crushed ice and mix with a straw until the drink is combined and the glass is frosty.

Garnish None listed in the recipe.

  • A spent lime hull is the shell left after squeezing the juice from half a fresh lime. In his replies on the page, Morgenthaler says he squeezes the limes by hand instead of muddling them, to keep their bitter oils out of the drink.
  • In a 2018 reply on this recipe, Morgenthaler says the recipes on his site now use 2:1 simple syrup.

Original recipe quantities.

Method as published

  1. Put the mint sprigs and sugar in a Collins glass and press the mint lightly with a muddler to release its oils.

  3. Add the rum, stir, then add ice.
  4. Top with soda water.

Garnish Mint sprig and lime wheel

  • The sugar goes in dry, measured in teaspoons, not as a syrup.
  • The soda is a top-up. Adjust it separately when scaling.

Syrup, rich syrup or dry sugar

Bacardi and Morgenthaler list the same volume of syrup. Bacardi specifies 1:1, while Morgenthaler says his recipes now use 2:1, so his version uses a richer syrup at that volume. If you only keep 1:1 syrup, his measure will not give the same drink. Punch uses no syrup. It muddles dry sugar with the mint, then muddles the lime pieces on top, all before the rum and ice go in.
