Rolls Royce

A stirred gin cocktail with vermouth and Bénédictine, in three attributed versions.

Go to the recipe ↓

The Rolls Royce is a stirred, strained gin drink. Two of the versions here, from Imbibe and Cocktail Virgin, build it on equal amounts of dry and sweet vermouth with Bénédictine as the accent. They differ on how much vermouth goes in and on whether the Bénédictine rinses the glass or goes into the mixing glass. Punch's recipe is a riff that drops the vermouth entirely, using two gins, moscato chinato, saffron liqueur and orange bitters.

  2. Put the gin, dry vermouth and sweet vermouth in a mixing glass with ice and stir.

Cocktail Virgin: measured Bénédictine

Contains alcohol

Ingredients

Original recipe quantities.

Method as published

  1. Stir the gin, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth and Bénédictine with ice.
  2. Strain into a cocktail glass.

Garnish Lemon twist, which the author notes he added himself

  • The source lists ratio parts (1/2 gin, 1/4 each vermouth) next to the amounts the author actually poured: 1 1/2 oz Beefeater, 3/4 oz Cocchi and 3/4 oz Noilly Prat.
  • Bénédictine appears as 1 dash with 1/4 oz in parentheses. These two amounts are not equivalent, so set this line separately rather than scaling it with the rest.

Garnish Lemon twist, expressed over the drink and discarded

  • The named products (Neversink Reserve, Old Raj Red Label, Maura Vergano Luli, Apologue, Angostura orange bitters) are given as examples of each category.
  • Bitters are measured in dashes, so that line is adjusted separately from the ounce measures.
  • This version uses moscato chinato and has no vermouth in its ingredient list.

Rinse or measure the Bénédictine

Imbibe runs 4:1:1 and Cocktail Virgin 2:1:1, so Imbibe's drink carries twice as much gin relative to total vermouth. The Bénédictine is handled differently too. Imbibe coats the glass before the stirred drink goes in. Cocktail Virgin adds it to the mixing glass, so it is stirred and diluted along with everything else.

Punch's version shares the gin, the Bénédictine, the stirred method and the lemon twist with the others, and the coupe with Imbibe. It is the only one served over a large ice cube, and its twist is discarded rather than left in the glass.
