Sober October: the Rules, and How to Actually Finish It

Sober October has one rule: no alcohol for the month. Everything else, the exceptions, the buddy systems, the charity pledges, is up to you. The people who finish tend to share one habit, which is replacing the drink rather than skipping it.

October is a harder month for this than January. January comes with resolution energy and everyone else is doing it too. October has football Sundays, dinner parties, the first cold nights of the year, and a calendar that ends in Halloween. The month asks more of you, which is exactly why finishing it feels better.

The rules, such as they are

The original UK version, Go Sober for October, raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support, and some people still run it as a sponsored month. Most people now run it the simple way. No alcohol from October 1 to 31. Some allow a single planned exception, a wedding, a birthday. Purists call that Ocsober heresy. We think a month with one honest exception beats a month abandoned on day nine.

Why most attempts fail in week two

The first days run on novelty. Week two is when the 6pm ritual comes looking for you, because the ritual was never really about alcohol. It is the cold glass, the bitter first sip, the signal that the workday ended. Take away the drink and leave the ritual empty, and the ritual wins by mid-month.

So fill it. Pour something that behaves like a cocktail, bitter, adult, over ice, in the same glass. That is the whole trick, and it is the reason our drinks exist. The Phony Negroni was built for exactly this hour of the day.

Stocking the month

A full October is roughly 31 evenings. The Sober October page lays out what to get for an every-evening ritual versus a weekends-only one, and the mix packs cover the difference between the two.

What people notice by November

Better sleep first, usually inside the first week. Clearer mornings. The surprising one is that the 6pm drink stays a pleasure, it just stops carrying consequences. A decent share of people who do the month keep a few alcohol-free nights a week afterward, not as a program, just because the drinks got good enough that there is nothing to give up.
