Non-Alcoholic Drinks for Athletes

Phony Negroni poured over ice at the pool

Ask anyone deep in a training block what they miss and it's rarely the alcohol. It's the six o'clock ritual: the good glass, the ice, the drink that marks the line between the workday and the evening. Marathon blocks, fight camps, season prep, or a plain rule about not drinking on school nights, the pattern is the same. The ritual goes, and the evening feels flat.

The fix is a drink built for adults who aren't drinking, not a sports beverage and not a soda.

Why bitter works when you're training

Sweet drinks read as dessert. A bitter one reads as a cocktail, which is the point of the ritual in the first place. The Phony Negroni is built on gentian root, the botanical that anchors classic Italian bitter aperitivi, with bitter orange peel for lift and real CO2 carbonation for the mouthfeel a spirit would otherwise carry. It's a 200ml single serve at less than 0.5% ABV, made in Brooklyn.

One bottle is a complete drink. There's no bottle of liquor open on the counter, no second pour by default, and no math the next morning. That's the practical difference training drinkers notice first.

The rotation

Evening one: Phony Negroni over ice with an orange peel. The flagship, and the one with SFWSC Platinum 2024 behind it.

Evening two: Phony Mezcal Negroni when you want smoke and spice instead of citrus.

Evening three: Phony Espresso Negroni for the early night before a long morning session. Coffee note, cocktail shape.

The weekend pour: Amaro Falso, the bitter botanical amaro-style bottle, after dinner instead of a heavy dessert.

The Starter Pack includes all six flavors, which is the cheapest way to find your default.

The taller serve

From the published recipe guide: the Phony Highball, a Phony Negroni lengthened over ice in a tall glass, and the Lighter Phony Spritz, cut with soda for a longer, lower-intensity drink. Both take under a minute and stretch one bottle across a full evening.

Straight answers

Is there alcohol in it? Less than 0.5% ABV, the standard threshold for a non-alcoholic label in the US. The brand publishes its answers plainly, including a full piece on who should check with a doctor first.

Is it sweet? No. Bitter, citrus, and dry. If you want sweeter, the Phony White Negroni is the brighter end of the lineup, and it still isn't a soda.

Cans or bottles? Both exist. Bottles are 200ml, cans 250ml. Cans travel to the gym bag and the cooler; bottles look better on the bar cart.
