The Non-Alcoholic Espresso Martini Alternative

The espresso martini earned its comeback for one reason: it's the drink that says the night is still going. Coffee and a cocktail in the same glass, dessert and a second wind at once. The problem, for anyone not drinking, is that most of what makes it work is texture and bitterness, and most zero-proof attempts replace both with sugar.
The non-alcoholic answer, already in a bottle
The Phony Espresso Negroni comes at the espresso martini's job from the negroni side. It builds the coffee note into a bitter, carbonated cocktail: gentian root for the backbone, coffee character on top, less than 0.5% ABV, 200ml single serve, made in Brooklyn. No shaker, no espresso machine, no foam that collapses. Open the bottle, pour it over ice, done.
It reads darker and drier than an espresso martini, closer to the after-dinner end of the Italian tradition than the party end. Which is precisely what the slot needs when the goal is coffee-and-cocktail without the alcohol.
Two ways to serve it
- The bottle serve: over ice in a rocks glass. An orange peel works; so does nothing at all.
- Phony with Espresso, from the published recipe guide. A fresh shot of espresso built into a Phony Negroni, for the full at-home ritual when you want to make the drink rather than open it. Four ingredients, five steps, all in the guide.
Where it fits
The dinner party's coffee course, the 9pm pour on a work night, the brunch table where half the guests are driving. It sits next to Amaro Falso in the after-dinner slot of the lineup: Falso for pure bitter, the Espresso Negroni when you want coffee on the finish.
Fair questions
Does it taste like an espresso martini? It tastes like an espresso negroni. Same job, different architecture: bitter and carbonated rather than creamy and shaken. If you want the cream-top texture specifically, that's a shaker drink, and the recipe guide's espresso build gets you closer.
Will it keep me up? There's real coffee character in the glass. If caffeine late in the evening is a problem, pour it at the earlier end of the night.
Where to start? A six-pack of the Espresso Negroni, or the Starter Pack if you want to test it against the other five flavors.
The whole family is in the non-alcoholic collection.
